Acrostic Poetry uses the first letters of a word or words to compose a poem.
Word Mystery Theatre is our dramatic writing experience with acrostic poetry.
First, notice that each letter is NOT a single phrase! The letters connect into a line of poetry. This disguises the word.
When the poem is read aloud, the audience cannot hear where each line begins and ends!
That creates Word Mystery Theatre!
What is the word hidden in the poem? It's a mystery!
The second read aloud is line by line so students can write the first letter of the word in the line and gradually see the hidden word or words emerge to their surprise!
An acrostic poem -- pause while audience writes a
Can be about anything -- pause while audience writes c
Really -- pause while audience writes r
Reading line by line till each letter is written: a c r o s t i c reveals the hidden word in the poem!

Jurassic Park: The Real Story by bob
Early one morning on a day long ago
Xeroxed and copied like many other days, but
This time
In the blink of an eye
Nothing would ever be the same again.
Catastrophe's whirlwind
Terrible explosions
Intense heat
Oxygen denied
No future for many.
Evening arrived
Venturing forth one would find
Earth's environments changed
Nothing having escaped
Time's upheaval.
It came from the 10th Century by Bob
Back in the distant past and
Like today, people lived
Under different systems of government.
Every region had separate
Tribes and rulers
Often opposing one another
One one occasion, a ruler united the people
The story remained un-remembered till 1996.
History it seems is never past but always with us
WRITING IN TEAMS CLASS: A STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE
Going to be creative
Or at least interesting
Otherwise my
Grade will be
Lower than the
Excellence I
Demand from myself
Oh, this is a
Constant quest or a lingering curse
Stay tuned to see how I do!
Negative Numbers
No Way! Ms G. This cannot be right!
Every number only
Goes
All the way from 1 to 100
To
Infinity.
Very strange! Why are you being
Ever so . . . ?
Not today, Ms.G!
Under no circumstances. What do you
Mean? Just
Because you are the teacher you get to say
Every number can
Really be positive and negative?
A Day at the Park
Mighty
Yells!
Fun on the fields
Running and jumping as
I throw the
Sphere as far as it can
Be thrown!
Easy laughter!
Effortless effort!
Dynamic exercise for
One and all.
Going to stop now, I'm too tired.

You might instead make the final letter of each line the hidden word in the acrostic!
